FaceApp with age filters –beware of risk of privacy

Everyone has been now crazy about FaceApp –the application making people to see how they look at different ages of their life. About hundred million people have already downloaded this app from the play store or from official Apple. Facebook, Instagram, and other social media platforms everywhere, people have posted their older/ younger looks. However, rare any has read about the Privacy policy of the app.

The privacy of the app says, it can access to the pictures, camera roll and even storage. Researchers claim that, by downloading this app, people invite Russian artificial intelligence to access their face and name for the government. They are anticipating this because the application has developed and is maintained in Saint Petersburg.

App relation with Russia!

The fact that the FaceApp is developed by the Wireless Lab based in Saint Petersburg, which is headed by Yaroslav Goncharov, ex employee of Yandex. This corporation has involved in multiple shady activities such as data tracking and spying, especially in Europe. That is why; the suspect on the Russia seems to be obvious. At the same, we must say that some actions cannot decide that all company from Russia dangerous.

FaceApp related issues

Following are the accesses that FaceApp requests its users to provide on their device:

  • full access to the network;
  • billing service access to Google Play;
  • Receiving data from the Internet.
  • network connection information;
  • preventing the phone from sleeping;
  • contents of the USB storage;
  • The ability to delete or modify those contents.

The app uploads photo and processes them on the cloud. On explanation, the head of the company says, the photo that users select only that one is processed.  He also claims the camera roll is not accessible. Users can access the app without providing the name and email.

The Opposers claim that the company can access the data of the people using FaceApp and misuse them according to their wish. The data can be shared to third party companies including Russia. The company head, one more time, has seen to deny the allegation by stating that the company does not let any data to reveal to third parry companies and not to Russia. But, the data sharing section on the app has some doubtful statements:

“You grant FaceApp a perpetual, irrevocable, nonexclusive, royalty-free, worldwide, fully-paid, transferable sub-licensable license to use, reproduce, modify, adapt, publish, translate, create derivative works from, distribute, publicly perform and display your User Content and any name, username or likeness provided in connection with your User Content in all media formats and channels now known or later developed, without compensation to you. When you post or otherwise share User Content on or through our Services, you understand that your User Content and any associated information (such as your [username], location or profile photo) will be visible to the public.”

Additionally, the data is not stored and securely properly. Such a weak database can cause data braches, leaked personal records, and sensitive data loss which is the major consequences of problems related to Cyber Security.

The providers comment on the issue of data tracking has yet to done. You all know that the data tracking and breaches are not a new in the wild, browse at your risk.
